    Lightbulb

Jus curious as to how some of your JRSC'd GSR's are doin at these boost levels. Ive been thinking more boost lately now that my LSD can handle the power.

Only problem is, i have no J&S, and have stock injectors. Needless to say, i have OEM pistons/rods(56,000miles).

JRCivic, i know you run 8psi, but i dont believe 8psi would net much gain. Is the motor DURABLE enough to do 10psi safely. Given 310cc injectors, maybe BKR6E-11 plugs(or cooler than BKR7E-11), can this be done?

I do race my integra(autox, dragracing)so i need reliable performance. I jus keep looking at DRAG GEN III horsepower numbers, and they put down 250+hp, i dont see why a JRSC@10psi(250hp)couldnt be reliable.

Maybe instead of the J&S, the JR BTC would be a better method of precaution.

Im really interested in this, so please, give some technically feedback. Id really like to do this. If i am wrong in any area, please point it out, or if you know of a better/safer way, also feel free to respond.

    Thank you,
    Tony

I'm right there with you Tony. I am really interested in the Endyn stepper pulley for 9 psi. 310cc injectors and BTC to accompany my new cartech (thanks Jim wink ) Hopefully this will get me going!

Gentlemen, do not underestimate safety. A J&S unit is basically a must at higher boost levels. Otherwise you are on the right track, 310's, BTC, and a Cartech FPR would be the way to go. Jim will chime in soon enough if I missed anything.

I guess my main concern is piston/rod/head gasket failure. Should i do a check on comp. across the board, then if everything is OK, jus go ahead with the J&S, 310's, and stepper pulley?

Also, i have never ordered anything from JRCivic(Jim), but i see myself getting everything from you, because i want the RIGHT things. I did forget about the CARTECH, thank you!

I'm doing this in the spring. 10psi via a CRV crank pulley. A J&S is NOT in my plans.

Detonation is the enemy. Prevent that and you're home free. Think about this:

How many FI Honda engines have you heard about that died?

    How did they die?

    1) Valve damage from revving to high.
    2) Melted pistons/rings from detonation.
    3) Mechanical mistakes that dropped valve into the pistons.
    4) Broken/bent rods and/or other components in the bottom end.

#4 is what you're worried about, and I'm not Joe Mechanic who's seen a million engine failures, but I've been listening for blown Honda engine stories for two years now and the only case of #4 I've heard about was from a massive dose of nitruos. (The picture floated around for a while - a nice b18c1 on the floor with a rod sticking out of a hole in the block).

Has anyone else heard of #4 type failures and knows what caused them? I assume some super high boosters have had this happen also, but kept it under wraps for competitive reasons.

Also, I don't really know the details on this, but didn't Larry of Endyn run 10+psi boost on one of his cars for a long time with stock internals?

I think 8psi has been proven very safe be the hoardes of us running that boost for a long time now. 9psi, via the stepper pulley appears safe also, although not as many people have run like this for long. What's one more psi?

Finally, you have to remember that increasing the boost 66% (6psi => 10psi) DOES NOT increase peak cylinder pressure by 66%. Most of the power gains (higher cylinder pressure) will occur well after top dead center. Peak pressure will increase, but not in proportion to the boost increase.

    See: http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/Forum40/HTML/004864.html

So my point of view is that, yes, 10psi may be near the edge of what the crank will take, but I don't know of many engines that died because of too much power. They almost all died from a fueling problem or an ignition problem, whether accidental or intentional.

If you're still worried, wait around. I'll be running 10psi by the end of March. You can see how long my engine lasts.

Oh... I missed that head gasket part... That could be an issue, but as long as you stop driving when it blows, you just have to replace it with a better one and that's one less thing to worry about!

And one other thing... At this boost level (9-10psi), you need to make sure you have a very open exhaust and an improved cooling system. Both of these are to keep cylinder pressures (and detonation risk) lower.

Thanks HOLDEN, i refreshed my memory on the "WHY STOCK HONDA ENGINES CAN HANDLE BOOST" post before i posted this.

Im wonder if my stock CAT, and GReddy header would also NEED changing, maybe the CAT, but not soo much the header. Reason being, now at 6psi, my gauge reads 8psi on max RPM/THROTTLE.

But yes, i am mainly concerned on RELIABILITY OF STOCK B18C internals.

Would it be BETTER to wait, untill i can go ahead and swap in the CROWER RODS/JE Pistons, and RACE ENG BLOCK GAURD?

    CROWER RODS=$$$????
    JE PISTONS(include rings etc.)=$$$????
    BLOCKGAURD=90$
    ---------------------
    Total=$$$$????

Jus would like some prices so ill have all the cards on the table.

    Thanks,
    Tony

It can be safe. Focus your efforts on tuning, not internals. The failures at this boost level are due to abnormal combustion. Eliminate that and the engine should be happy.

This is precisely why I believe a J&S is not necessary. It would be nice to have, but with quality time 0n a dyno I think money meant for a J&S can be put elsewhere.

If you're worried about blowing head gaskets get some ARP head studs. They can be torqued down to about 90 ft lbs as opposed to only 60 with stock head bolts.
